A CONVICTED sex offender from Inishowen was back in court this week after assaulting a young woman in a nightclub.
William Friel (63) of Dunaff, Clonmany, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a young woman in a Letterkenny venue at Monday’s sitting of the District Court.
The court heard Friel rubbed his erect penis against the leg of the woman who was wearing a short skirt after he “overcome himself” in the packed bar.
Judge Paul Kelly was informed that Friel had a previous been convicted on a number of accounts of indecently assaulting a “female child” at Derry Magistrates Court in 1993, when he received a conditional two-year discharge.
Detective Garda Stephen McGonagle said Friel was a prominent member of the community in Inishowen and volunteered as a linesman for the Urris GAA Club. His wife was in court to support him.
Evidence was given that the victim of the Letterkenny incident feared Friel would go on to commit a more serious sexual offence.
Judge Kelly placed reporting restrictions on the case, meaning that the victim could not be named nor could anything be published that might lead to her being identified.
