Comhaltas host mini-Fleadh in Letterkenny this Saturday

THE Letterkenny branch of Comhaltas will bring a Fleadh atmosphere to Letterkenny this Saturday with a series of outdoor musical events.
The Irish trad and culture group plans to pepper the town with small groups of musicians in a bid to lift spirits following months of lockdown.
Comhaltas is hiring over 20 musicians from across the north west to perform at various locations. The afternoon of music will put a particular focus on the Irish language and Donegal’s hiring fair history.
“In running this event we plan to encourage people to enjoy their local area in a safe way,” said vice-chair of the Letterkenny Comhaltas branch Joe Gibson.
“To help lift the spirits we intend to place small groups of musicians along the trail providing a sort of Fleadh Cheoil atmosphere in the town.
“We feel that lively music flowing through the air will help promote a positive attitude and add an extra sense of adventure to the trail, discovering new artists and arts along the walk.”
Musicians will be on the streets from 12.30pm to 3.30pm after which a main session will take place at the band stand on Market Square. A number of crafters, including a scone maker and a traditional basket weaver, will also be putting on small displays.
And as it is all outdoor, Comhaltas believes the Covid risk will be greatly reduced.
“We feel confident that it will be a way of providing entertainment to the local community without incurring much risk regarding Covid-19. And it will afford local musicians an opportunity to ply their trade in a safe manner,” Joe Gibson added.
