‘Colm might need to go to Specsavers’ – Bonner

Donegal manager Declan Bonner says RTE pundit Colm O’Rourke ‘might need to go to Specsavers’ after he criticised Donegal skipper Michael Murphy before the Ulster semi-final win over Tyrone.

Bonner was quizzed on O’Rourke’s comments when he rubbished Joe Brolly’s suggestion Michael Murphy is the player of the decade.

O’Rourke said what had increasingly happened over the last five years ‘is that he has drifted out to midfield and ended up giving and taking short hand passes, and added that ‘greatness must be dictated by the impact in very big championship matches in Croke Park’.

Not surprisingly, Bonner was not in agreement with the former Meath forward.

“I think Colm might need to go to Specsavers because in any of the big games I’ve seen Michael Murphy, he does not go hiding that’s for sure.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant, he’s a real leader on and off the pitch and he goes looking for work when he has to.

“People say he should play here or there but Michael was outstanding against Tyrone, when he needed him he was winning ball on kick-outs and kicked four or five scores. Michael’s been one of the top players in the country over the last decade.”
