GARDAÍ have issued a statement urging drivers to beware of deer on the roads amidst rutting season.
They described the animal as unpredictable and asked drivers to take extra care when driving, especially at dusk and at dawn.
“Be prepared. Ensure that you are always in a position to stop suddenly should you encounter deer on the road.
“Reduce your speed, especially in areas where there is a warning sign for deer. Should you see a deer on the road, dip your headlights as the full beam may cause them to freeze.”
The statement comes following an increase in collisions involving deer across the county.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Falcarragh based councillor Michael McClafferty, shared details of one recent incident where a driver “narrowly escaped” following a collision with a deer in Creeslough.
The collision cost the driver over €10,000 in damages.
The independent councillor has long advocated for action to tackle the growing deer population. He stressed that the lack of urgency from relevant authorities could have fatal consequences.
Cllr McClafferty is actively seeking a meeting with Glenveagh National Park but has yet to receive a response.
If you are involved in road traffic collision involving a deer or if you witness such an incident, you are advised to contact Gardaí immediately.
