Seamus Coleman made a welcome return to competitive football after five months out injured in Everton Under-21s’ 3-1 Premier League 2 loss at Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues’ Club captain played the opening 45 minutes at Leigh Sports Village as he works his way towards full fitness following the medial knee ligament injury he sustained in the 2-2 draw at Leicester City in May.
Coleman started at right-back before being replaced by Roman Dixon for the start of the second half.
United edged a close contest, having taken a 2-0 lead before the break courtesy of goals from Joe Hugill and Shola Shoretire.
Sean McAllister reduced the deficit when he netted eight minutes after the restart but the hosts netted again late on through Hugill to take the points.
Everton Under-21s are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Mansfield Town in the EFL Trophy.
