Cold snap forecast to hit Donegal this weekend

AS we head into the first weekend of the year, a cold snap is expected to bring colder temperatures, frost and wintry showers across Donegal.

According to Met Éireann, the weather will turn sharply colder, with frost developing and wintry showers mainly affecting the north and northwest.

Today, New Year’s Day will see isolated light showers, particularly along northern coastal areas. However, it is expected to remain dry thanks to high pressure, which is bringing plenty of dry weather overall.

While there may be some light rain or showers at times, these will be brief and scattered.

Friday’s forecast includes a mix of good sunny spells and some wintry conditions. Although many areas will enjoy clear skies, there is a chance of sleet and snow showers, particularly in higher ground and northern regions. Temperatures will drop to a chilly -2 degrees.

The weekend is expected to be very cold with mostly dry conditions, although wintry showers will continue in the north and northwest. Daytime temperatures will range from 2 to 5 degrees, with light to moderate northwesterly winds making it feel even colder.

At night, temperatures will plunge to around -3 degrees, bringing sharp frosts and the possibility of ice, especially on untreated roads.

Looking ahead to next week, the cold snap is expected to continue, with plenty of dry weather but occasional wintry showers or rain.

Meanwhile, it promises to be another busy few days for the gritting staff of Donegal County Council who are expected to be out on all designated routes across the county.
