Coláiste Ailigh 3-12 Ballybay Community College 2-10
COLÁISTE Ailigh came good in the closing five minutes to see off Ballybay Community College in Garvaghy today, and claim the O’Doherty Cup for the very first time.
John Bosco Gallagher’s side played with the wind in the first half and led by 0-10 to 0-2 at the break.
They extended that advantage when Mikey Sweeney fired to the net in the 34th minute, and Ballybay’s cause wasn’t helped when Joel Wilson was shown a straight red card.
However, the Monaghan school then hit 1-6 without reply in 14 minutes to draw level.
All the momentum was with Ballybay at that juncture, but Coláiste Ailigh didn’t give up, and goals from Sean McNulty and Sweeney (penalty) put them in front again.
Padraig Hughes scored a goal at the death for Ballybay, but it was just a mere consolation, and Coláiste Ailigh now advance to the All-Ireland semi-final on Saturday.
