A JOINT clothing appeal for Syrian refugees has been launched by the Letterkenny Islamic Association and the Donegal Intercultural Platform.
The donations collected will be sent to help refugees in camps in Greece. Approximately 15,000 men, women and children are stranded on the Greek islands closest to Turkey with living conditions worsening every day.
Launching the appeal Amir Gamil, of the Letterkenny Islamic Association said: “The refugees in these camps are often very cold and need clothes, blankets etc to survive.”
Mr Gamil said donations for babies in particular are urgently required. Items in high demand include baby clothes, nappies, towels, cream, wipes, and baby blankets along with coats, new jumpers, blankets, t-shirts, cardigans, blankets, bras, children’s buggies, and shoes etc.
“The last two clothing appeals we did in 2017 and 2018 were very successful with the last one requiring not one but two visits by the collection van,” he added.
Donations can be dropped off at Letterkenny Islamic Community Centre, 2 Meadowbank Park, Long lane, Letterkenny (daily 1:40 (except Fridays) or 7:10 and Saturdays 1:30 to 2:30). The last date for items to be dropped off is this Saturday (January 19).
