ARDARA Councillor Terence Slowey is the new Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council. His Fine Gael colleague Cllr Barry O’Neill is the Leas Cathaoirleach.
The posts were formally ratified at the Annual General Meeting of the Council this afternoon.
He was co-opted to Donegal County Council in May 2001 and re-elected in June 2004 when he became Fine Gael Whip in the council. He served as Donegal VEC Chairman in 2005-2006 and he has been involved in politics for many years.
Cllr Slowey worked as an Environmental Chemist in Dublin and lived in Co Meath where he worked closely with former Taoiseach – John Bruton and was his Election Agent for three elections.
Selected as General Election Candidate for Donegal South West at the Fine Gael Selection Convention in June 2006, he later withdrew his name. He stood for the party in the 2007 Seanad election, losing out on a seat by just three votes.
He takes over from Cllr Ciaran Brogan (Fianna Fáil) as part of a five-year pact agreed by the major parties within the 37-person Council.
