EXECUTIVE members of Donegal County Council are to write to the garda commissioner seeking clarity over what it will mean for Milford division when Letterkenny Garda Station becomes a designated Gaeltacht facility.

In March, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris revealed he was designating Letterkenny Garda Station as a Gaeltacht serving station. This would mean that in time, if people wanted to issue complaints or queries through the medium of Irish they will be able to do so.

Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn said that over the next year or two, gardaí at the station will undertake training in this regard.

Speaking at the latest Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting, Councillor John O’Donnell called for assurances that Milford will retain a district headquarters like it currently has.

Councillor Ian McGarvey supported his motion, saying he was concerned that such developments could see a downgrading of status and the potential for a reduction in services.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle, disagreed, citing the move could be nothing other than positive. He said it is in line with current policies in Letterkenny, and pointed to the town’s Gaelscoil and Colaiste Ailigh.

“It’s a positive development and will not take anything away from any other division.”

With the motion having been approved, members of the Executive are to write to Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to seeking clarification.
