IN a celebration of Irish language and culture, Údarás na Gaeltachta has awarded the prestigious “Clannad – Fifty Years in Bloom” scholarship to Gaeltacht artist Daniel De Buitléir.
This €30,000 scholarship, named in honour of the legendary music group Clannad, recognises the band’s influence on Irish language affairs over the past half-century.
The scholarship, designed to foster artistic creation in the Irish language, will enable Daniel to dedicate the next three years to developing new artistic work.
Expressing his deep gratitude for the opportunity, Daniel said: “It is a great honour for me to receive this scholarship. Clannad’s achievements for the Irish language and Gaeltacht music have always been a great inspiration to me.
“I am very grateful to Clannad for their inspiration and to the Údarás for this wonderful opportunity to develop my art and contribute to the rich heritage of the Gaeltacht.”
Tomás Ó Síocháin, Chief Executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta, highlighted the organisation’s enthusiasm for De Buitléir’s future: “We greatly look forward to the new work he will produce, and we are certain that he will follow Clannad’s example in promoting the Irish language and Gaeltacht culture.”
While Rachel Holstead, Head of Ealaín na Gaeltachta, noted the significance of investing in artists themselves.
She said: “The best investment that can be made in the arts is direct investment in artists. We were encouraged by the large number, high quality, and diversity of applications for this Scholarship from Gaeltacht artists and we wish Daniel, and the members of Clannad, all the best in the new chapter ahead of them.”
