A clampdown operation is being rolled out locally as the festive shopping and party season gets underway.

A garda spokesperson appealed to drivers to “never get behind the wheel of any vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and or drugs”.

The spokesperson said: “We are coming into the Christmas party season and we urge everybody to think twice before making any poor decisions when it comes to road safety. If you are going out socialising please leave your car at home. Get a taxi or organise a lift. Never get a lift with someone if you think they may have alcohol or drugs in their system.”

The spokesperson also called on anyone who suspects that someone is driving while under the influence to contact gardaí immediately.
