TWO young Churchill brothers have kept themselves busy during lockdown by building a rally car to sit in when they play the Xbox.
Eight-year-old Leon Doherty and younger brother Shay (5) built their car out of cardboard boxes and have spent the past week covering it with hundreds of advertising business cards which have been arriving in the post.
“They got the idea to build the car out of cardboard,” their father Peter explained.
“My wife Breda runs a hair salon (hairDOS, Churchill) and there were boxes coming with the deliveries and they set about building a rally car for the Xbox rally game they play.
“When they had the car built they went looking for sponsorship from their mother so we got a business card from Brenda’s salon and it spiralled from there,” he said.
After speaking on the telephone to their uncle Garvan Boyce from Ramelton another business card soon arrived in the post.
“The excitement that morning when that first card came in the post was class so we decided to ask people on Facebook would they mind posting the boys business cards, business stickers or anything they can attach to their car.
“The response has been phenomenal. They’ve had over one hundred letters from people from all walks of life all over Donegal. They’ve even received business cards from people in Dublin who we don’t even know. My sister used to live in San Francisco and we got one from a law attorney yesterday,” he said.
JP Mooney from Sign It, Ramelton, designed and delivered custom made graphics for the boys car while Philip Case forwarded on rally car stickers to add to their custom built rally car.
“The excitement of the boys has been amazing. They’ve been waiting every day for the postman, Paul, to arrive to see what he has from them. People’s kindness is really bowling us over. A huge thank you to each and every person who took the time to send the boys a letter in the post,” he said.
Leon and Shay are pupils at Stramore National School in Glendowan and they’re both keen Gaelic footballers.
“It’s funny. They spend most of their time in the garden playing football which keeps them busy but now they’re also got a rally car for when they play the Xbox,” he said.a
