Church sacristy ransacked and tabernacle damaged

GARDAÍ are appealing for information after a church sacristy was ransacked and damage was caused to a tabernacle. It was one of a number of incidents in the Greencastle and Moville area over a two-day period.

Gardaí were en route to the previous burglary call when they observed that the lights were on inside St Columba’s Church, Ballinacrae, Moville, on Monday, December 11 some time between midnight and 3.25am.

Gardaí were en route to the previous burglary call when they observed that the lights were on inside the Church. They went to check on the building and could hear the alarm which had been activated. The front door of the Church had been forced open as had the Sacristy door. The Sacristy had been ransacked and damage had been caused to a tabernacle. Another couple of rooms within the Church building were also ransacked after entry had been forced. Nothing is believed to have been stolen but substantial damage was caused.

Meanwhile, gardaí are appealing for information in relation to a number of incidents that occurred in the Moville/Greencastle area in the early hours of Monday, December 11.

A burglary occurred at a house in the area of Meenletterbale, Lecamy, Moville between midnight and 3am on Monday, December 11. It is believed that entry was gained to the house through an unlocked rear door and a sum of cash was stolen. A Dewalt angle grinder and a Dewalt drill were also stolen from the property.

A burglary occurred at Greencastle Golf Club overnight between Sunday, December 10 at 7pm and 8.30am the following morning. Entry was gained by forcing a rear window and a number of doors were forced inside the building also. Rooms were ransacked and a sum of cash was stolen from a cash register and also from a charity box within the building.

Meanwhile, a burglary occurred at a property in the Greencastle area between 2.20am and 5.30am on Monday, December 11. A purse was stolen from an unlocked car at the property and an unlocked shed was entered and a red/black Makita fuel pump was stolen from within.

An attempted theft occurred at a property in the area of Carrowhugh, Greencastle between 4am and 6.30am on Monday, December 11. Two unlocked cars were entered and ransacked at the property but nothing was stolen from them.

A garda spokesperson said: “If anybody has any relevant information in relation to these incidents or if they observed any suspicious activity/vehicles in the Moville/Greencastle area in the early hours of Monday morning we ask them to contact the Garda Station in Buncrana on (074) 9320540. The Garda Confidential line may be reached on 1800 666 111. We appeal to anybody who may have been in the Moville/Greencastle areas between Midnight and 7am on Monday, December 11 and who had a dash cam to please make the footage available to Gardaí.”
