SHOPPERS in Letterkenny have been out in their droves to pick up their Hallowe’en costumes with terrorising doll Chucky, killer clowns and Donald Trump among the most popular picks this year.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Toni Zasa who works in the Trick or Treat Hallowe’en Store in The Courtyard Shopping Centre, said this year has been their busiest yet and puts this down to Derry’s success in establishing itself as the capital of Hallowe’en.
Toni said: “We are definitely busier than we were last year. I have been working here for three years now and every year it has become increasingly busier. I think that because Derry won best Hallowe’en destination in the world that has had an effect on Letterkenny because we are so close to there and people would go to that. It has definitely been busier and it started earlier this year. People were shopping straight away and buying costumes whereas in the past they would come in and just look at things.”
The reboot of the movie Child’s Play with the terrifying doll Chucky has seen this character become extremely popular among boys and girls this year. Toni said children are very good at always being on top of horror movies and while last year it was all about Pennywise the clown this year Chucky has taken over. For girls Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad is a favourite this year while zombie cheerleaders in a variety of styles have proven to be really good sellers for the second year running.
“Killer clowns are always popular. The masks especially – anything that looks like it is from the film IT,” added Toni.
When it comes to adults it is not as easy to predict with a lot of last minute shoppers still out there.
“For adults they are a bit more all over the place because women just want to be sexy. There isn’t a whole lot of specifics with that one. Men just want the goofiest costume usually or whatever their wife or girlfriend tell them to get. The adults have only just started shopping for costumes so today we will see a lot more adults.
“Carry me costumes are also popular for adults and children. Those are the ones that look like you are riding on the shoulders of someone like Trump and Trump has also been popular for all ages.”
