Chloe Magee reaches quater-finals in Italy

CHLOE Magee bowed out of the Italian Open after being pipped by Spaniard Carolina Marin, the world number 16 in the quarter-final of the womens singles.

Both players were beaten by Irish Open winner Beiwen Zhang last week, Magee losing in the semis after Marin was thumped by the American in the round of sixteen.

Magee got off to a winning start in Italy, defeating Switzerland’s Alya Huser in straight sets, the Raphoe woman winning 21-11 21-13.

She followed that up with a last sixteen win over European Junior medalist Delphine Lansac, Magee taking the victory 21-15 23-21.

In the quarter-final she came up against Marin, who was the number one seed for the event.

Despite a bright start to the match it was the Spanish number one who took the semi-final spot winning 21-17 21-14, though Magee put up a strong performance for the most part, but Marin took the momentum and the win with a rousing finish.

In the Mixed Doubles event, the Irish number one pairing of Sam and Chloe Magee progressed to the quarter-final by beating Vasily Kuznetsov and Viktoriia Vorobeva of Russia and then, in the last sixteen, beating Trikusuma Wardhana of Indonesia and his partner Karoliine Hoim of Estonia.

In the quarter-final, the Magees Jonathan Nordh and Emelie Lennartsson of Sweden. The Irish took the opening set 21-19 but went on to lose out with a 21-16 21-13 second and third set scoreline
