WITH news of Pope Francis’ health woes hitting headlines worldwide, the children of Scoil Mhuire in Creeslough have opened their hearts and let the Holy Father know he is in their prayers by sending get-well cards to the Vatican.
The idea to send the cards to the Pontiff, who has been in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14 after a week-long bout of bronchitis became exacerbated, was the brainchild of local priest Fr John Joe Duffy and teachers at the school.
Speaking about the idea, Fr John Joe said, “Everyone in Creeslough feels very close to Pope Francis.
“He has kept us in his prayers ever since the awful tragedy which befell Creeslough two years ago, sending a message to the people of the village. We did this to let Pope Francis know that he is in our prayers now at this time of illness. Pope Francis is a wonderful role model with his kindness and he has inspired the children greatly.
“Ten get-well cards from each class have already been sent to the Vatican and they will be there for Pope Francis when he is able to read them. It is important for him to know that, just as we were in his heart two years ago, he is now firmly in ours and we wish him a speedy recovery from his illness.”
Asked whether he had received any indication whether the cards had reached the Pontiff, Fr John Joe replied, “To be honest we don’t know, but I hope they will. I am not expecting any kind of reply from the Vatican to let us know. He is undoubtedly getting hundreds if not thousands of messages and cards wishing him well and we arer just a small part of that. All that matters is that he gets better.”
