CHILDREN as young as 12 years of age were detected driving tractors during a tractor run in Gortahork.
Gardaí have said the youngsters were found driving the heavy machinery on the main N56 road during the local event.
Some of the children could not reach the brake pedals nor did they have the strength to steer the tractors, owing to their young age,” Gardaí claimed.
They also said a number of young teenagers aged 13 and 14 years were also detected driving tractors.
A garda spokesperson warned that a tractor run does not mean that drivers are exempt from the rules of the road.
The spokesperson also called on parents to be vigilant.
“Local gardaí are now considering the consequences, and wish to thank all those who took part and who were legally permitted to be on the roads.
“We remind all parents that a tractor run does not mean that participants are exempt from the rules of the road.
“Organisers have a duty of care to the public, as do the gardai.”
