CHARITY campaigner and former RTÉ journalist Charlie Bird has been remembered as a national treasure at a service in Dublin to celebrate his life.
The father of two died on Monday aged 74 after a long battle with motor neurone disease, which he was diagnosed with in October 2021.
During the service, the journalist’s five grandchildren presented mementos reflective of his life.
These included rosary beads he was given by Donegal singer, Daniel O’Donnell, which will be buried with him on Inis Oírr on the Aran Islands.
Leading tributes to the broadcaster on Monday, Daniel O’Donnell described Mr Bird as “an inspiration” and said he was “richer” for having known him.
“It is with sadness that I learned of the death of of Charlie Bird. I am richer because of the short friendship that we had. He was truly an inspiration.
“On behalf of Majella and myself, I send our sincere sympathy to Claire and Tiger. Rest in peace Charlie,” he said.
