IT was back in October 1992 when James and Anne Russell’s first road sweeper lorry rolled out of their driveway from their home at Glenard Park in Letterkenny.
It marked their first trek into the world of business and the road ahead offered hope and a journey into an exciting new venture.
James had worked previously with Letterkenny Urban District Council and brought that experience into a new family business. Glenard Plant Ltd was born and 30 years on, it is a highly successful operation, employing over 20 people at its premises at Tara Court in Letterkenny.
To mark 30 years in business, the Russell family have organised a family fun day this Saturday and they are inviting friends, customers and their families to join them for an afternoon of celebration.
They have lots of fun and activities planned for all the family and there will be music and entertainment with the David Craig band.
James and Anne’s daughter Christine is helping to organise the event and she’s extending an invitation to the local community to come along on the day.
“We were hoping to hold an anniversary event back in October but out of respect to the families of the Creeslough tragedy, we decided to put it on hold,” Christine said.
“So we decided instead to go with Easter weekend. We think it’s important to mark the occasion because it’s a brilliant success story and it’s nice to have something to celebrate for my parents who put so much of their time and effort into making the business the success it is today.”
Christine is part of the administrative staff at Glenard Plant which is now managed in the main by her brother and sister, Eamonn Russell and Denise McTeague.
The family fun day will take place at the Glenard Plant premises on Tara Court but because space for parking is limited, there will be parking provided at Donegal ETB’s Ballyraine premises, close to Arena 7, with buses organised to ferry people to and from Tara Court.
There will be food, fun and plenty of entertainment with a bouncy castle for the kids, spot prizes and loads more.
Any money raised on the day will go to the Endoscopy Unit at Letterkenny University Hospital and the Upper GI Surgery Department at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin – two services used by James’ brother Anthony in recent times.
