A STAGGERING €24,500 has been raised for the Donegal Hospice following a charity climb of Errigal Mountain in memory of two family members who both died from cancer earlier this year.
The climb took place earlier this month when over 200 people from the tight-knit community of St. Johnston came together to climb Errigal for the very worthy cause.
The climb was in memory of much-loved St. Johnston woman May Browne and her son in-law Gary Crossan who both sadly passed away four weeks apart.
Eager to give something back to the Donegal Hospice, while celebrating the memories of May and Gary, the Browne and Crossan families planned the special charity climb.
Speaking to the Donegal News about the successful charity climb, May’s daughter Caroline Clarke said those who supported the fundraiser in any way were “so good” and “very kind”.
The families presented the cheque to Deborah McDaid, Treasurer of the Donegal Hospice at the Fisherman’s Inn in St. Johnston last week.
While accepting the cheque, Deborah told the families that the €24,500 raised would cover night nursing costs for one month.
Gary’s wife, Marie Crossan said this put it into reality how much it costs to keep the hospice going.
“As a family we wanted to give something back to the hospice as they were very supportive in a time of need for us,” she said.
The sisters took time to thank the local community, friends, family, the Browne family, the Crossan family and everyone that supported the fundraiser and the raffle in any way.
Damien McFadden from Lagan Harps was also thanked after he organised t-shirts for the climb.
They also paid special thanks to Craft Merchants, Paul Browne and Eugene McDaid who helped raise funds for the worthy cause.
