Charges brought over attack related to soldier’s death

REPORTS are coming in this afternoon that Lebanon has charged seven people for participating in an attack against United Nations peacekeepers that killed Irish soldier Seán Rooney.

Private Rooney was killed and three others were injured on December 14 when their UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) vehicle was attacked near the village of Al-Aqbiya.

The 23-year-old was laid to rest in Newtowncunningham on December 22.

It is understood the charges range from murder and attempted murder to destroying vehicles.
