Letterkenny’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is taking place this year on Sunday, March 17 and Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce are inviting people, clubs and businesses from around the county to take part.
The Letterkenny parade is one of the biggest in the county and once again, the Chamber is hoping to make this year’s event a full-on celebration with a festival atmosphere on the day.
March 17 this year marks the start of One Donegal Social Inclusion Week and the Chamber would love to see floats in the parade reflecting this theme.
Chamber CEO Toni Forrester said “One Donegal Social Inclusion Week is the opportunity to promote and highlight the positive work that the public and community sectors are involved in, to reduce discrimination, poverty and social exclusion, but it is also an important opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by vulnerable members of our community.
“As always we are sending the call out to sporting groups, dance studios, gymnastic clubs, community groups and schools to get involved. The parade is an opportunity to celebrate in style on this important national holiday,” she said.
Chamber President Fionnuala Rabbitt said that last year was one of the biggest ever turnouts for the parade and they are hoping to keep the momentum going this year.
“Saint Patrick’s Day is an important event in the calendar marking the start of the spring season. This year it falls on a weekend, making it extra special so everyone in Letterkenny is looking forward to a fantastic few days of fun and celebration. The Letterkenny Parade is a great family event in Letterkenny, so the more groups that get involved the better the parade,” she said.
Leonard Watson, Chair of the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee highlighted the fact that the parade is organised by Letterkenny Chamber and over the next few weeks the committee will be fundraising for the event.
“Over the last few years we have had a brilliant response from the business community who donate towards the cost of the parade. If any business wants to make a donation please just get in touch with the office or one of the committee. These direct donations make such a difference to the success of the parade,” he added.
This year entertainment will start at the stage at Market Centre at 1.30pm with the parade proper starting at 3pm. There will be a photo booth located on the Main Street, where spectators and their families can get a commemorative photo of the day. There will be music along the Main Street from 2pm.
