Taking part in Letterkenny’s first ecumenical Carol trail.
Over 100 people took part in the first ecumenical community carol trail in Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter last Friday. In a truly memorable evening, carol singers walked up the Church Lane, through the heart of Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter and stopped to pray and sing Christmas hymns at key points along the way.
Organised in association with Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce, the carol trail was facilitated by Trinity Presbyterian Church, St Eunan’s Cathedral and Conwal Parish Church. This year marked the first community carol trail in Letterkenny and judging by the delight of those that took part, it won’t be the last.
The service began at Trinity Presbyterian Church before the group made its way up the Church Lane. Garda Tina Fowley very kindly accompanied the trail and managed traffic throughout. The carol service finished in Letterkenny’s oldest building, Conwal Parish Church before the group headed to the parish centre for tea and mince pies.
This very special evening gave people the chance to take time and reflect on the real message of Christmas and the Cathedral Quarter committee would like to thank everyone that made the event possible.
The carol trail marked the end of a series of events organised by the Cathedral Quarter committee in the run up to Christmas. Earlier that day, the ‘White Winter Christmas Garden’ was unveiled on the Church Lane. This initiative invited schools in the town to design and create Christmas window boxes for the Cathedral Quarter. The winning prize for best group entry went to Park Early Learning School, Mountain Top, Letterkenny and a special prize was also awarded to Jimmy McClafferty from Educate Together for his ‘Polar Express’ design.
Finally, last Sunday saw the second fundraising concert by Mark Black for the regeneration of Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter. Taking place at The Greenroom in Voodoo, both concerts were an excellent showcase of the best in local musical talent.
The Cathedral Quarter originally began as the Save the Church Lane campaign. Since its formation earlier this year, the project has gathered significant momentum in its efforts to regenerate the historical Church Lane. The long term goal is to create a hidden treasure in the heart of Letterkenny for locals and tourists to enjoy.
