Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter and the celebrated American actor, Robert Duvall have, according to Cathedral Quarter spokesperson, Donnan Harvey, something big in common, and it’s a dance – the Tango.
Duvall, who is known for playing hard men in films, has a much softer side in private life and is a frequent visitor to Argentine night clubs not, as he points out, for women or drinking but to dance the tango. He describes the tango as “my obsession”.
And the good news is that Duvall’s obsession soon could be yours.
As Donnan explained: “We, in the Cathedral Quarter, are delighted to announce our big event to celebrate our tenth anniversary is really something special especially for all dance enthusiasts.”
Argentine Tango performers Elizabeth Cordone and Matias Rivas will be holding a demonstration and workshop in Letterkenny Community Centre on Wednesday, 8 May at 8pm.
“As far as we are aware this will be the first ever such event held in Ireland and we are really looking forward to bringing a bit of South American culture to Donegal,” Donnan added.
Elizabeth and Matías are distinguished dancers, choreographers, and teachers of Argentine Tango.
Their passion for this artistic expression has led them to form a partnership which has taken them across the globe performing in many top shows.
And it’s a labour of love, both being passionate about the art form that’s synonymous with their home country.
Their romance with dance was, they say, forged in the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires and now they want to promote it worldwide.
A spokesperson for the duo said: “Their commitment to the spread of tango transcends borders, as besides teaching in dance academies in Buenos Aires, they have taken their art on international tours.
They carry a piece of the Buenos Aires night with them to every corner of the world.
At the heart of tango, the Recoleta neighborhood in Buenos Aires, they have created their own space, “Recoleta Tango Studio”, where they share their culture with curious local and foreign students.
And their spokesperson added: “Tango is more than a dance. It is a legacy of love, a fusion of emotions that transcends borders and cultures”
So, if you fancy embracing the tango, Elizabeth and Matias will offer an unforgettable Buenos Aires night in the heart of Donegal next month.
Tickets for the event cost €15 and can be bought on Eventbrite or on the night.
