A cask of Crolly Whiskey raised €7,000 for a cancer charity when it was sold at the Scotch Whisky Industry Charity Auction earlier this week.
The Irish single malt 2020 ex-Bourbon 200 litre Cask was donated by Letterkenny-based businessmen Joe Devenney, Conor McMenamin and Kieran Davis – the promoters behind the new whiskey distillery and visitors’ centre on the former Crolly Doll factory site.
The Whisky Auctioneer was held in support of Beatson Cancer Charity, raising funds for and promoting awareness of the charity’s important work.
The cask was one of 180 which make up the exclusive Crolly Founders 180 Club. The casks, which retail at €6,600, ex duty, contain 200 litres of whiskey. The last cask will be filled this weekend.
“We pre-sold 180 founder casks. We’ve filled 179 and we’re filling the last one on Saturday. It’s an ex-Bourbon 200 litre Cask which equates to 335 bottle of whiskey,” Mr Joe Devenney said yesterday.
Pre-purchase
Investors who pre-purchase a cask of whiskey can open it up in five years time, personalise bottles and use them as corporate gifts or for personal consumption.
“It’s 180 years since whiskey was last legally produced in Donegal by William Leathem in Bohillion, Burt so as a nod to him we pre-sold a cask for each of the interim years,” he added.
Three years is the minimum maturation period for the spirit, so it will July 2023 before the first whiskey produced in Donegal in over 180 years comes of age.
They hope to produce over 15,000 litres of alcohol annually for the first five years and their focus will be on the tourist industry and the international whiskey market.
