Casino in Letterkenny has no planning permission- Cllr McMonagle

BY C.J.MCGINLEY

PLANNERS are to investigate claims by a local councillor that a casino is operating in Letterkenny without planning permission and a licence for gaming machines.

Speaking at Monday night’s Town Council meeting, Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle called for a full investigation by planners into the situation.

It follows a planning application submitted to the council by Majestic Casino Ltd, Cahir O’Doherty Avenue, Buncrana for change of use of a bingo hall to private members casino club at Ramelton Road, Letterkenny.

However, objecting to the plans, Cllr McMonagle said that while planning permission had been given for a bingo hall at the location on the first floor, a casino has been operating at ground floor level for some time, without planning permission and he queried why it had not been closed down.

“This development was given permission for a bingo hall, and what we have now is something completely different. Now, we see they have submitted a change of use application from a bingo hall to a casino,”

“The Bingo Hall is the only aspect they got planning permission for and we now have a casino operating for the past few months on the ground floor. Why has it not been closed down? It hasn’t got planning permission and there are also gaming machines in it and there has been no money paid for licences to this town council,” Cllr McMonagle added.

“When did they ever get permission for a casino. I’ve had a lot of people on to me about this and the fact they didn’t apply for permission for a casino. Nobody should be allowed to ride horses through planning regulations,” he added.
