CARRIGART Tidy Towns have renewed an appeal for residents to recycle responsibly, this comes after a spate of incidents of illegal dumping at the recycling units in the church car park in recent weeks.
A spokesperson for the committee has stressed that despite their pleas, the situation has deteriorated further and the vital community facility is now effectively being used as an illegal dumping ground.
They said that just last week, a large bag containing jagged shards of double or triple-glazed window glass was left at the site. In another disturbing incident, several electrical appliances including two microwaves, two toasters, a sandwich maker, an electric heater, a kettle and a collection of electronic items were dumped beside the graveyard wall.
The act, which took place on Saturday, October 11, at approximately 8.15pm, was captured on CCTV.
The group is renewing appeals to the individual responsible to return and remove the items immediately.
Another area of particular concern is the ongoing misuse of the two clothing recycling bins at the facility.
“Clear signage explicitly states that duvets, pillows, cushions, bed linen and similar items should not be deposited.
“Nonetheless, these bins are being filled weekly with inappropriate materials – including not only bedding but also food waste and empty cans,” the spokesperson said.
The group outlined that the issue has escalated to such an extent that the recycling service provider has warned it may no longer be feasible to service the bins, due to the low volume of suitable clothing being collected.
