CARRIGART Tidy Towns has issued an appeal to residents to recycle responsibly after an incident of illegal dumping at the recycling units in the church car park last week.
For several years, the group has been urging users of the recycling facilities not to leave items beside the bins. While progress has been made and there has been a noticeable improvement over the past year, the local committee were left shocked by the discovery of illegal dumping on Thursday, October 1.
They found large boxes filled with nearly 20 pillows, three duvets, six cushions, bedspreads, and bed linens.
“These items are not accepted by the collector, and the group has no means of disposing of them,” a spokesperson for Carrigart Tidy Towns explained.
But what they said was particularly concerning was the presence of food waste and unwashed food cans among the dumped items.
The local committee made a direct appeal to the person who regularly leaves bags of unwashed Cat Club cans at the site, often every fortnight.
They have urged everyone, especially the ‘serial offender’, to wash their cans and place them in the appropriate recycling bin.
“This small act would make a big difference and is a simple courtesy to the volunteers and workers who maintain this facility for everyone’s benefit.”
The group concluded by encouraging all residents to do their part to help keep Carrigart clean and tidy.
