Donegal senior football manager Paddy Carr says that Michael Murphy kept him in the loop in recent weeks regarding his intentions for the 2023 season.
Murphy announced his decision to retire last week and it certainly took a large swathe of Donegal supporters by surprise.
To the naked eye, the Glenswilly man appeared to have at least another couple of years left in the tank but he has now decided that the time is right to step away after 16 season at senior level.
It is undoubtedly a blow to Carr and his squad, as Murphy is still one of the best players in the county.
However, the new manager respects Murphy’s decision and will have to plot Donegal’s pathway ahead without him.
“Michael has been the total professional and he kept me informed about his thinking the whole way along.
“If Michael stopped playing in a 100 years it would still be a big miss for what he has given the county. Players like that don’t come around too often.”
