WHILE all eyes were on the Met Gala last week, the girls from Cardonagh Community School were turning heads at the Junk Kouture Dublin City Final as they stunned with their winning design ‘Invidia’.

Invidia was created by Transition Year students Ciara Gilmore, Ailish Doherty and Julia Grant out of old storage boxes they found in their art teachers storage room.

Using old recycled mesh curtains to form the base of their skirt, the girls completed their look with a head piece made out of broken embroidery hooks.

Travelling to Dublin last week to compete against 80 up-and-coming eco-conscious creators and fashion designers at the Junk Kouture Dublin City Final, ‘Invidia’ was one of ten winning designs selected by judges Louis Walsh, Keilidh Cashell, Tara Kumar and Stephen McLaughlin to compete at the 2023 World Final in London on October 12.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Invidia team member, Ciara Gilmore said they were over the moon when their design was selected.

“We were so shocked to be selected. The competition was so difficult but we are delighted to be going through.

“The atmosphere in Dublin was absolutely unreal, we had a couple of teachers and friends there supporting us,” she said.

Pauline McDermott, an Art Teacher in Carndonagh Community School said she is so proud of the girls for their achievements.

“We are very excited to be heading to the world final and to be representing Ireland in London. The girls have done amazing. “The competition is about taking rubbish and turning it into something beautiful and I think they really achieved that.

“Ailish did an amazing job modelling and she has two very supportive team mates as well,” she said.

Pauline said working as a team is what the competition is all about and that is exactly what the girls did.

“They supported each other and we are very proud of their attitude and how they have represented the school,” she said.
