The 21-year-old Lettermacaward man makes the move to Home Park after a memorable two seasons at Bradford City.

The defender becomes the third new signing made by Pilgrims manager John Sheridan, a former Republic of Ireland international.

McHugh’s contract at Bradford was set to expire this summer and  the Donegal man has made the return to League 2. Last season, Plymouth finished tenth in League Two, while Phil Parkinson’s Bradford came eleventh in League One.

McHugh, capped by Ireland at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level, joins Deane Smalley and Lee Cox as the new signings at Home Park.

After joining Bradford in 2012, having had a stint in the League of Ireland at Dundalk, McHugh was instrumental in the Bantams’ run to the Carling Cup final, scoring a crucial goal in their two-legged semi-final win over Aston Villa – a header in the 3-1 win at Valley Parade.

McHugh played at Wembley in the final, but Bradford suffered a 5-0 defeat to Premier League Swansea City.

Later that season, McHugh was an unused sub as Bradford defeated Northampton 3-0 in the play-off final.
