Cancer advocate warns LUH must be upgraded

A DONEGAL cancer advocate has warned Letterkenny University Hospital must be upgraded in the wake of a damning report, revealing that Ireland has the second-highest rate of new diagnoses in the European Union.

LUH is currently a Model 3 hospital, but Betty Holmes insists it must be advanced to a Model 4 in light of the report findings.

A model 4 hospital is larger is size in terms of bed numbers and would provide a wider range of sub-specialties.

The report, which examined cancer incidence rates across EU countries, highlighted the disparity in access to diagnostics, with individuals in deprived regions like the north west facing higher risks of mortality due to limited healthcare resources.

Ms Holmes, who is chairperson of Donegal Action for Cancer Care (DACC), expressed concern over the findings, stating that the report underscores the need for equitable cancer care in the country.
