Canada’s cannabis smokers rolling up to sample Donegal

FOR decades Donegal has been getting the thumbs up from Canadian tourists but it is now proving a hit with the country’s pot smokers too.

It is some weeks since the North American country moved to decriminalise cannabis and suppliers have been struggling to keep up with demand.

A strain of the narcotic that smokers have been rolling up to enjoy more than most though is one named after the O’Donnell county.

In fact the very first gram of cannabis sold following its legalisation on October 17 was a gram of Donegal.

The product is grown by the Canadian company Tweed although it is not immediately clear why the cannabis growing giant has chosen to name its product after Donegal.

According to the cannabis forum leafly.com, the substance is a “mix of citrus and pungent diesel notes”.

Not unexpectedly, Donegal has been given the thumbs up by the county’s Cannabis Social Club.

Candice Faulkner of the Donegal Cannabis Social Club.

Candice Faulkner, founder of the Donegal Cannabis Social Club, said, “I first heard of the Donegal strain when a man called Ian Power contacted our club. He told me that he bought the first legal recreational gramme in Canada and the strain name was Donegal. I was delighted to hear it and very surprised. We are sending him a Donegal Cannabis Social Club t-shirt and mug to say thanks for supporting us and choosing Donegal at such an epic moment.”

Club members are in the process of trying to find out who named the substance Donegal and why. Candice Faulkner also took a swipe at the Government here over its continued criminalisation of Ireland’s cannabis-using population.

“Canada has completely legalised cannabis and even has a strain named after our county,” Ms Faulkner said.

“But in Donegal and the rest of Ireland if we are caught using cannabis we are criminalised. It is bizarre to watch these countries progress while we stay in the dark ages. Cannabis users are not criminals.”
