Speaking ahead of Saturday night’s showdown in Omagh, Setanta mentor Kevin Campbell spoke of the need for his men to be prepared for an immense physical challenge.
And that is exactly what they got from a really feisty and fired up Na Magha.
The Derry side’s problem was that they were a bit too fired up at times and conceded some needless frees which Declan Coulter capitalised on in super style.
Young Oisin Marley, Josh Cronolly McGee and Sean Ward used their physique to telling effect along with Steven McBride and Michael Donaghue to withstand the Na Magha onslaught.
“They did lose their discipline and Deccy is our free taker and when we have frees from 50-70 yards out we expect to see them go over,” said Campbell, who has joined Gary McGettigan’s backroom team this year as a coach.
“We knew that Na Magha were going to be physical, and we knew we could go at them, and they lost their discipline a bit.
“I thought Conor McGettigan did a good spoiling job on their danger man Declan Foley for a period.
“It was a seven-point win and not pretty but we did not play as well as we would like to have. We are there anyway, and it gives us something to work on for the next day.”
