Campaigners welcome progress toward feasibility study for Letterkenny rail link

CAMPAIGNERS have hailed a meeting to discuss advancing rail connectivity in the north west as “positive and constructive”.

Last week representatives of the West Ulster Railway Initiative (WURI) met with Minister of State for Transport Sean Canney TD, to discuss advancing rail connectivity in the north west.

Minister Canney agreed to engage with Northern Ireland’s Minister for Infrastructure, Liz Kimmins, to explore joint funding for a full feasibility and route study into a proposed rail line linking Letterkenny and Derry on a shared island.

The meeting was described as “positive and constructive” by the campaigners.

WURI said they believe this marks an important step toward improving cross-border transport links, supporting sustainable travel options, and expanding educational, economic, social and tourism opportunities for communities across the north west city region and beyond linking our communities throughout the Island of Ireland.
