In recent weeks, the Comharchumann Thoraí (Tory Co-op), together with the local Christmas lights/decorations committee established an online crowd-funding page through the popular GoFundMe website.

Their aim is to raise €2,000 to put towards their ‘Light up Tory Island Christmas 2016’ campaign.

A spokesperson for the group explained that an increase in population on the island in recent times has really enhanced the sense of community there, particularly among younger generations.

“We would like to put up street lights on the east town and west town, outside wall decorations, wreathes and a crib. It’s almost 30 years since we have had this many children living on the island and we would like to make this Christmas as magical and memorable as possible for them.”

In just 23 days, the committee are well on their way to achieving their goal, with €1,515 raised to date, and counting.

There has been an amazing response to the online funding campaign with well-wishers commenting. Ex-pats and those with a strong connection to the island are among those who have been sending donations from as far away as Australia, and America.

It is looking very likely that the target will be met, and Tory will be lit up for Christmas, this year promises to be one to remember for Islanders.

A spokesperson for the committee explained further: “Santa will arrive on the helicopter on the December 23 to meet all the good girls and boys. We will be putting sheets in the local shop/post office which will cost €2 per line. We will have hampers and vouchers and other prizes and the draw will take place on December 23. We would be extremely grateful for any donation.”
