THE current vacant Donegal consultant Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) post is to be filled early in the new year.
A meeting of the Regional Health Forum, West in Galway on Tuesday heard how Donegal Mental Health Services (DMHS) are currently working on filling the post.
Chairperson of the forum, Councillor Gerry McMonagle sought an update on the matter. Responding, Dermot Monaghan, integrated healthcare area manager, Donegal, said: “In relation to the Consultant CAMHS MHID post, the permanent post is currently advertised by the Public Appointment Service. DMHS are currently working on filling the post on a temporary basis. The temporary post has been accepted with the candidate going through the clearance process. It is anticipated that the candidate will take up post early in the New Year.”
The meeting was told there are a number of children awaiting the service, however, referrals to CAMHS ID service are not yet being accepted.
“The MHID Consultant is due to commence with DMHS in January 2026.
“The executive clinical director (ECD) and consultant psychiatrists in CAMHS will work with the new consultant regarding referrals when he/she takes up post.”
Cllr McMonagle also queried what alternative service the HSE is providing for CAMHS patients who require this service.
Responding, Mr Monaghan said no alternative service is being provided.
“While we have explored alternative options, they have not progressed as intended. We remain committed to delivering a workable solution until the post is in place.”
