CALLS have been made to introduce an additional lane at the Mountain Top to ease traffic congestion coming into Letterkenny.
Queues of traffic climbing the road toward the George Boal Roundabout from Illistrin has become a familiar sight for commuters travelling from west Donegal toward Letterkenny.
Independent councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easpuig said that he raised the issue with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) during a recent meeting in Dublin.
“There is a huge traffic congestion problem in Leitir Ceannain and there has to be work done to relieve this.
“We are all moving into one big urban area, the biggest urban area within the county,” he said.
The independent councillor spoke of the delays people travelling from all ends of the county face on a daily basis but particularly those travelling from west Donegal.
He has proposed that a new lane be added to the stretch of road at the Mountain Top after the George Boal Roundabout to ease congestion coming into the town.
“The 35 to 40 minute delay in the morning at peak times is not acceptable.
“It is not acceptable for those trying to get to school or trying to get to work.”
Cllr Mac Giolla Easpuig added that the emergency services are also impacted by the traffic delays.
“These delays cost lives,” he stressed.
