Calls for urgent meeting as traffic chaos continues

CALLS are being made for an urgent meeting to discuss the gridlock that has gripped Letterkenny in recent days.

Motorists have reported how journeys that normally takes five minutes are now lasting up to an hour.

Ongoing roadworks at Pearse Road West, Circular Road and the dual carriageway are being blamed for creating the bottleneck.

Businesses say their takings have been hit as a result of people giving the town centre a wide berth.

With the bank holiday weekend looming, local councillors are calling for an urgent meeting about the tailbacks.

Councillor Michael McBride said, “I have had representations from local businesses and they say their takings are well down. They are telling me that people are avoiding the town centre at all costs.

“When you look at the turn out for the election in Letterkenny, it was absolutely abysmal and that has to be down to the fact that people could not get out at lunchtime to cast their vote and those who went home after work weren’t venturing out again.

“There were measures put in place before these works started but the bottom line is that there is something badly wrong here. That is why I have written to senior officials within Donegal County Council, including CEO Seamus Neely, asking for an urgent meeting to discuss this and to see if we can find a way forward. We have not seen traffic jams like this in Letterkenny for a very long time and it simply is not sustainable,” Councillor McBride added.
