CALLS have been made to install static speed cameras at accident blackspots throughout Donegal following the recent spate of road fatalities in the county.
Inishowen Councillor Terry Crossan made the calls this week after a third person passed away, in the space of two weeks, following a collision at Quigley’s Point at the weekend.
Greencastle’s Donna McDermott, aged in her 30s, was the fifth person to die on the county’s roads in just 13 days.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Cllr Crossan said he will be putting a motion to the next plenary meeting of Donegal County Council on September 30.
“I will be calling for the installation of cameras in areas historically known to be accident blackspots. The gardaí are under-resourced and I think we need more checkpoints and a more visual presence of gardaí. Every time an accident happens we just can’t be saying ‘that’s terrible’.
“Now is the time we have to be pro-active and try to do something constructive and positive that may have an impact on reducing the fatalities on our roads,” he concluded.
