Calls for more grit to be made available after cold snap

A NUMBER of Donegal County Councillors are set to raise motions at tomorrow’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, calling for increased provisions of grit for roads and housing estates following last week’s cold snap.

The motions come in the wake of the county’s first snowfall of the year. With temperatures plummeting below freezing, roads and footpaths became treacherous.

Councillors are now calling for more accessible grit in towns and rural areas to ensure safer conditions for residents.

Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly has called for the establishment of a team to ensure that all grit bunkers in housing estates throughout the MD are filled.

Meanwhile, Cllr Declan Meehan is pushing for an audit of all housing estates under the control of Donegal County Council within the MD, to ensure that grit deposits are readily available for residents in case of future cold weather events.

Cllr Donal Coyle will also raise the need for grit in rural areas that are not part of designated gritting routes. He is calling on the Council to ensure that grit is stored in multiple locations so that locals in these areas can access it when needed.
