TUESDAY’S meeting of the Glenties Municipal District heard concerns about the growing “car culture” plaguing Falcarragh.
Groups of up to ten cars or more regularly gather in the car park of the national school and church, performing dangerous and illegal manoeuvres on the main road leading into the town. The issue was highlighted in a story in the Donegal News last month.
Cathaoirleach of Glenties MD, Michael McClafferty, called for a meeting between local councillors, gardaí, schools and churches to address the ongoing situation.
“We all need to gather around the table and get something sorted,” the independent councillor said.
In recent weeks terrified residents spoke to the Donegal News about recent incidents outside their homes including reckless driving, dangerous stunts like “diffing” and carrying out donuts on the national road, as well as the throwing of fireworks, all of which have caused increasing fear in the community.
Cllr John Sheamuis Ó Fearraigh also raised concerns at this week’s meeting.
He described the reckless driving as a danger to road users and gardaí trying to intercept the drivers, warning that if the issue isn’t addressed urgently, it could lead to a fatality.
