A DONEGAL councillor is calling for crash barriers to be installed at Keelogs junction in Churchill following “yet another” accident over the Christmas period.
With the motion previously passed by Donegal County Council, work was unable to be carried out due to the lack of funding.
Now calling for road safety barriers to be erected both at this junction and directly across from Churchill Quarries, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly said the Council need to act now and not later.
“We recently passed the 2024 Budget and on page 24 it states that the Council continues to provide funding for works within MDs relating to footpath upgrades and public lighting.
“This funding may also be used for other works prioritised by MDs such as the repair of vehicle restraint systems.
“So on that, once again, I will be asking Donegal County Council’s Roads Engineer at our next meeting this month to again look into providing funding to have these safety issues addressed by erecting safety barriers as soon as possible,” he said.
With many using this busy junction daily as a drop off point for local school children, Cllr Kelly said it is too late when something serious happens.
“I want to see these safety barriers erected as soon as possible.
“I will also be asking our roads engineers to have a safety assessment on this road carried out and to have both the surface and the camber of the road assessed to ensure it meets the required standards because, in my opinion, accidents are occurring here far too often,” he said.
