Calls for council to tidy historic railway bridge

FURTHER calls have been made for Donegal County Council to carry out remedial work – including the removal of ivy and vegetation – on an historic old railway bridge at Upper Corkey, Manorcunningham.

The matter was first raised by Cllr. Donal Coyle at a meeting of the Letterkenny-Municipal District Council in June 2023 – but nothing has happened since.

Having raised the matter again at the November meeting, in an official response, he was told that the matter has been referred to the local authority’s bridge section to assess what works are required.

The iconic bridge was on the old Londonerry and Lough Swilly Railway Company line that ran from Derry to Letterkenny, and then on to Burtonport.

Steam trains and diesel railcars traversed the line for more than 70 years until services were finally withdrawn in July 1953.
