A CALL has been made for the roadworks at the Pole Star roundabout to be sped up to a avoid further traffic disruption.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Municipal District of Letterkenny-Milford, Cllr Donal Kelly urged the council to speed up the roadworks on the main road coming into Letterkenny.
He is particularly concerned about the speed of progress at the new left turning or third lane at the Polestar roundabout.
Cllr Donal Kelly said he is aware that some work has already been completed but added it is essential to get the works carried out quickly and suggested adding ‘a couple extra night shifts’ to complete the lane.
Cllr Kelly said, “I understand that some of the works have already been completed and that is good to see.
“However, I do think it is essential to get the new left turning or third lane at the Polestar roundabout operational as soon as possible to keep the traffic flowing, especially now when schools are back and there are more cars on the road.
“I think the council could look at a couple of extra night shifts to get the road up and running,” said Cllr Kelly.
The €6 million project, for road improvements from the Dry Arch to the Polestar roundabouts, had been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The project length is 65 weeks and the work is to be carried out at night between the hours of 7pm to 7am.
The scheme will provide improved safety, functioning and capacity by providing an amended road layout.
It will minimise the potential for collisions by removing unsafe turning manoeuvres and reducing speed to 60km/hr.
It will include new cycleway and footway infrastructure both inbound and outbound, three pedestrian/cyclist crossing facilities on the N56, two dedicated bus lay-bys and new route lighting. It will also include a significant new flood protection and boardwalk structure adjacent to the River Swilly.
