TWENTY YEARS after the Celtic cross was erected outside St. Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny, a call has been made to light up the iconic landmark.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh has suggested that spotlights could be placed under the cross which could have special filters to reflect colours for different events.
At this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Cllr Kavanagh said a lot of people visit the area of Cathedral Quarter.
He said the cross could be lit up and filters applied to reflect colours on different national days – similar to the town’s Polestar.
Seconding the motion, Cllr. Gerry mcMonagle described the cross as a “fantastic sculpture and a part of the Cathedral Quarter”.
Responding to Cllr. Kavanagh’s suggestion, a council spokesperson said: “An assessment can be carried out to establish if this is feasible and the costs and implications of putting spotlights in place at this location.,
“If established as suitable and the motion passed, appropriate funding opportunities can be sought.”
