COUNCILLOR Donal Mandy Kelly has called on the council executive to explore the possibility of creating a viewing area in the wooded area that has recently been cut in Churchill woods just outside Churchill Village.
He said there was a “massive opportunity” to put a pull in, set down/viewing area looking over Gartan Lake since the recent harvesting of this wooded area which would be of massive benefit to the already very popular Wild Atlantic Way route.
Speaking this week at the Letterkenny-MIlford Municipal District meeting, Cllr Kelly said: “Since the trees were felled on the Coillte wood it is the first time I remember actually being able to see Gartan Lake. There is massive history to this area and huge tourist potential. It is spectacular.
“Ask Coillte to leave a section there rather than replant the whole area. Churchill Community Group can already see the potential for it,” he said.
Seconding the motion Cllr Ciaran Brogan said there was already a solid foundation in place in the area.
“It is a great opportunity that will hopefully not be missed,” Cllr Brogan said.
Council executive member Francis Conaghan said he would be happy to facilitate a meeting between Coillte and the local community group.
Possible sources of funding would be through the Minor Tourism or Oris funding.
