DONEGAL County Council is planning to expand its ‘Leave no trace’ litter policy and to apply it to greenways and not just beaches in the future.
The news comes following representations by Inishowen Cllr. Terry Crossan who called on the council to provide more litter bins along greenways “as a matter of urgency” and that they be emptied on a regular basis.
In an official response, he was informed that litter bins are serviced by road area teams from the council, by third parties on the council’s behalf, or by the council’s litter team as well as community groups.
It was pointed out to him that the council has adopted a ‘Leave no trace’ policy at several designated beaches whereby the public is “encouraged to bring any waste home with them and to dispose of it in a responsible manner.”
This has been found to successfully reduce litter in these areas and it is proposed to expand the ‘Leave no trace’ policy to other areas in the future.
The matter is likely to be considered by the Roads & Transportation Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) and the Climate Action and Environment SPC this year.
