THERE has been a call for safety measures to be installed on a Letterkenny ‘escape route’ where cars travel at ‘phenomenal speeds.’
A call has been made for traffic calming measures to be introduced on the Rahan Road, Letterkenny in the interest of road and pedestrian safety.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle said he was raising the issue after he was contacted by a number of parents living in the area who are concerned about the speed of cars traveling in the area.
“Children in both estates are all friendly with each other and they play together so there is a large volume of children using the road.
“The Rahan Road is one of the escape routes out of town. There is a lot more traffic on the roads than what it is meant for and the cars travel at a phenomenal speed. Parents are worried about their children,” said Cllr McMonagle.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Donal Coyle who said there is a lot of families living in the area due to the new housing developments. He said something needs to be done to make the area safer.
Cllr McMonagle called for traffic calming measures to be put in place but added ramps may not be suitable due to the nature of the road.
He suggested an island be installed to help children cross the road safely.
A Council spokesperson said, “Arrangements will be made to have a speed assessment carried out at this location.
“If considered necessary funding opportunities will be sought to introduce possible speed reduction measures.”
